Specialised Business English

English for the work you actually do. inlingua Cheltenham builds professional English training around your job, your industry and your goals — one to one, or for a group of colleagues studying together. As well as general business communication, we teach subject-specific English in fields from aviation and medicine to engineering, finance and law-adjacent politics, drawing on a network of specialist instructors. Every course is quoted individually, because no two organisations need the same thing.

Speaking English confidently at work

Our Business English courses are designed to help you succeed in the international business world, and our teachers are specially trained to teach professional communication.

General English gets you to the point where you can hold a conversation. Professional English is a different problem: chairing a meeting when you are not sure of the register, writing an email that sounds firm rather than rude, presenting to a room when your second language deserts you at the worst moment. That is what these courses are for.

Two ways to study

For individuals

One-to-one training

  • Focus on your job. Practise the exact skills you need — giving presentations, writing professional emails, leading meetings.
  • Study at your own pace. The teacher focuses entirely on your language level and your goals, with nobody else's needs to accommodate.
  • Get direct feedback. Your teacher's job is to help you fix and improve the small but important parts of English that make a large difference at work.
  • Work in your own field. One-to-one lessons can be built around a specialist subject as well as general business communication.

For groups

Company and group training

  • Team learning. Learn to negotiate, solve problems and work together in English — a fast way to build a team's confidence with international clients.
  • Better communication. A shared vocabulary and shared habits across a team are worth more than one strong speaker.
  • Industry-specific instruction. The teacher adapts the curriculum to your group's professional focus — engineering, banking, travel, healthcare, education and more.
  • Groups from four. Colleagues, or a group travelling together from a school, university, corporation or government department.

Groups often travel to us together to complete targeted training in their field or discipline. We take a professional approach to these programmes and treat them as work rather than as a language holiday.

Sectors we teach

inlingua Cheltenham is dedicated to providing a custom study experience that fits every student's needs. We work with a variety of specialist instructors who can train students in different subjects — so the English you learn is the English of your profession, not a general course with a business chapter bolted on.

Your field is not on the list?

That does not mean we cannot teach it. Just because a subject is not featured here or in our brochure does not mean it is unavailable — we have a wide network of specialist instructors and can usually source a skilled English teacher in your target field.

Email info@inlingua-cheltenham.co.uk and tell us the discipline. We will tell you honestly whether we can cover it.

Business activities and trips

To get the most out of a course, we can add special activities and excursions to your schedule. These focus on improving business skills in real situations rather than in a classroom.

Visit local businesses

See how British companies operate day to day, and practise the language in the environment where you would actually use it.

Listen to professional speakers

Following a presentation given at native speed, then asking a question afterwards, is a very different skill from classroom listening.

British business culture

The unwritten rules — how meetings are run, how disagreement is expressed, how much of what is said is meant literally.

Built into the schedule

Activities are arranged around your course rather than bolted on afterwards, so they reinforce what you have been working on that week.

Pricing

Because every student and every company has different goals, we do not publish a fixed price for professional English training. Pricing is determined by what you actually need, and we work with you to create a budget and a study plan that fit.

Request a quotation

Email us and tell us four things. We will come back with a costed study plan.

  • Who the training is for — one person or a group, and roughly what level of English they have now
  • What they need to be able to do — the meetings, documents or situations they are getting stuck in
  • The sector or discipline, if the English needs to be subject-specific
  • When, where and over what period — at our school, at your premises, or online

Common questions

How much does Business English training cost?

There is no fixed price. Every student and company has different goals, so pricing is determined by what you need — the number of people, their level, the hours, the location and whether the English has to be subject-specific. Email info@inlingua-cheltenham.co.uk and we will work with you to create a budget and a study plan.

Can you teach English for my particular industry?

Very probably. We regularly teach English for engineering, health and medicine, tourism, military, aviation, finance, history, literature, politics, communication, religion and energy. If your field is not on that list, tell us — we work with a network of specialist instructors and can usually source a skilled English teacher in the target field.

What English level do we need to start?

B1 and above. Professional English builds on a working foundation of general English, so if a colleague is below B1 we would usually suggest they take a General English course first, or combine the two.

How small can a group be?

Group training runs from four students. Below that, one-to-one training is usually a better fit anyway — you get the teacher's full attention and a course built entirely around one person's goals.

Can you train our team at our offices?

Yes. Courses can run at our school in Cheltenham, at your own premises, or online. For training outside the UK, see our overseas contracts page.

When can we start?

Anytime. Unlike our group courses, which start on Mondays, professional training is scheduled around you. Give us as much notice as you can, particularly for specialist subjects where instructor availability may be limited.

Tell us what your people need to do in English

Not just their level — the situations they are getting stuck in. That is what we build the course around, and it is what makes the quotation useful rather than generic.
