ONP Nursing and IELTS preparation

From 1 September 2006 the only route to registration with the NMC will be through the Overseas Nurses Programme (ONP). All applicants who apply for nurse registration and who meet NMC minimum requirements will be required to undertake all or part of the ONP. The ONP sets out common entry standards, a compulsory 20-day period of protected learning for all nurses trained outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and, where appropriate, a period of supervised practice.

To fit in with the availability of placements and the ONP programme offered by the
University of Glamorgan we are offering a two stage programme of study and supervised practice.

Stage 1
Before you can do pre-registration to the NMC you are required to be a registered nurse in your country who already has an IELTS level of 6.5 (From February 2007 this will be 7.0) through the Academic paper. All nurses will be required to have this level of English before they can apply for registration. If you are fully qualified and licensed nurse in your country we can offer you two possible IELTS preparation programmes.
1. 16 weeks – 30 lessons per week concentrating on Language development, IELTS preparation and
Medical English.
2. 28 weeks – 30 lessons per week concentrating on language development. IELTS preparation and
Medical English. To be able to enter these programmes you are required to have a language level equivalent to at least IELTS 5.5/6.0 for course 1 and IELTS 5.0 for course 2.
Once you have achieved the required language level we will help you apply to the NMC for pre-registration, which you have to do to be able to go onto stage 2.

Stage 2
In conjunction with the University of Glamorgan and the validated Nursing Homes approved by the
University you will be placed into one of these Nursing Homes for your supervised practice, which will
last as long as designated by the NMC and will include 20 days of protected learning which will be
taught by the University or inlingua Cheltenham. Once you have finished your supervised practice
and the protected learning component of the ONP programme you will then be able to apply for full
registration with the NMC and be available for full employment in the UK as a nurse. Once you are
fully qualified and employed as a nurse in the UK, you will be able to bring your family over to live with
you with assistance to have language courses, schooling for your children and employment
possibilities for your husband or wife.

Please Note:
To apply for this course you must be a fully qualified nurse with experience. Before you can join the
courses in the UK you will be required to prove your language level and the University of Glamorgan
will check your nursing qualifications. This will mean for visa purposes you will require confirmation of
entry from inlingua Cheltenham for the language level and the University of Glamorgan for the
nursing qualifications.
